Ooo000ooo

“Wow, you guys have your hands full,” Elle said as we walked up to the front of city hall. “Here, let me take some of that from you.”

“Thanks,” Penny said, letting Elle take one of the bags from her and one from Michael.

I shook my head when she reached for one of mine. “I got it.”

“You’re just the person I wanted to see this morning,” Penny said cheerfully to Elle. “Do you have a minute to talk once we set all the food down inside?”

“Of course, I’m just getting here, and you’re the first person I’ve seen. I’m all yours,” Elle said.

The two of them seemed to get along perfectly, and in many ways, they were a lot alike.

“I heard from Cheryl that you used to live in New York City?” Penny asked.

“I did, yes,” Elle said with a smile as we walked up the steps to city hall. “I went to school there as well - journalism - and tried to work there, but realized it wasn’t for me.”

“I’m… well, I’m starting to realize the same thing,” Penny said softly.

Michael rushed ahead and grabbed the door before I could, and he held it for us as we walked through.

Elle raised an eyebrow. “Thinking of leaving the city for good?”

“I’ve thought about it for a while, but seeing that you need a pediatrician in town, even after we figure out this problem… well, it had me thinking. My family is here after all.”

Penny nudged me gently and smiled.

“I’m happy to answer any questions you have,” Elle said. “And trust me, we’d love to have you, if you’d be interested. I know it’s a big decision and all, but if I can help in any way, just let me know.”

We walked down the hallway toward the makeshift clinic, and I let the two women talk. Michael, once again, held the door for us since he had his hands mostly empty. As soon as we stepped into the space, however, the cheerful discussion from Penny and Elle went silent.

Abe rushed over to us. “Perfect timing. We need your assistance. Oliver declined over night,” he said.

My heart stopped, and the blood seemed to drain from Penny’s face. She stared at Abe for a second, listening as he broke down everything that had happened recently - all in medical lingo I didn’t understand. I helped Michael put the food down on a table and handed out what we could. My eyes never left Penny who rushed over to Oliver’s side, the pancakes she had picked up from him discarded on the table beside me as she began checking the boy’s vitals.

It didn’t take a doctor to see that something was wrong with him. His eyes were only partially opened, and his face had a yellowish tinge to it.

Watching the genuine care in concern in Penny’s face as she stood over Oliver, it became clear to me - if she stayed in Liberty, even part-time, I’d be willing to do what she had asked me.

I would be willing to make her a mother.
